AURORA, Colo — Graebel Movers, Inc., a division of Graebel Companies, Inc., recently completed a relocation of library assets for the American River College in Sacramento, Calif. The move required books be transferred to multiple campus facilities while the new library was being built, then moved into the new library once completed.
American River College (ARC), one of the largest community colleges in California, built a new, three-story library, Boettcher Library, and hired Graebel to facilitate the moving and storage of nearly 62,000 library books. Books were temporarily stored in multiple portable facilities on campus. Graebel and ARC worked together to ensure the books were organized prior to the first move, so they could be easily located for students and staff during the construction.
After 16 months in the campus storage sites, Graebel set up multiple cleaning stations to remove dust and dirt from the library materials, which included fragile archives prior to the transfer. Larger machine carts were also used for oversized archives to allow them to lay flat and protected. Graebel used its precise call tag data system to deliver materials properly to their assigned locations.
The transfer took three days to complete, with the first day coinciding with graduation. “We arranged our plan so crews could continue working inside, but not be visible to the public during graduation. No noise was associated with our activity, including truck transport, during their commencement ceremony,” explained Rob Turnage, Graebel commercial account manager.
“We thank the entire Graebel team for getting our books in place,” says Connie Ferrara, public services librarian for ARC. “This move required a lot of attention to keep everything in order, and project conditions were not ideal. Narrow entries and aisles, as well as rainy weather, were obstacles. Thank you for pulling through for us. We enjoyed working with your noble crew, and our students can now easily find the resources they need.”
