Although the U.S. economy has shown signs of slowing recently, organizations are making plans to relocate a greater number of employees this year. According to a Worldwide Employee Relocation Council report that covered employee transfer volume and costs, however 32-percent of employees remain resistant to relocations. Additionally, 24-percent of dual-income families are also reticent to forego a spouse or partner’s salary. With few exceptions, the U.S. real estate market continues to weaken companies’ abilities to relocate their employees, as 88-percent of home-owners find themselves in a negative equity situation. Unemployment continues to be high nationwide; and, according to last week’s Dun & Bradstreet preliminary impact analysis of the Mississippi River flooding 2.14 million employees in the four most impacted states of Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee may be impacted. Missouri has 750,982 employees, or 35-percent of these total employees. From an economic perspective, there may be a $483.1 billion in sales at risk. It is unclear how the real estate and relocation industry in this region will be further affected by the natural disasters this year.
Relocation professionals at the Kansas City regional round table, ‘Re-inventing Relocation’, will have on their agenda ways to identify new, innovative strategies to overcome these obstacles along with discussions on policy benchmarking formulae.
